The Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Immunology was created in 2003. Today, it has three faculty members who participate in 5 undergraduate and 5 post-graduate courses and supervise the research work of three post-doctoral fellows, three postgraduate students and the diploma work of several undergraduate students. We are in close collaboration with several Universities and Research Institutes, both national and international. We are performing research in aspects related to Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular and Structural Biology, Genetics and Pharmacogenomics, which are funded from several research programs.

The Laboratory of Pharmacognosy & Chemistry of Natural Products of the Department of Pharmacy is well equipped and very active in synthesis and structure-activity studies on bioactive peptides, synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds (e.g. non-natural amino acids) and isolation and characterization of natural products. Recently, the Laboratory has been certified by the TUV Rheinland Group, according to: DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000 for the establishment and application of a quality management system for "Research Process for the Design and the Development of Peptides and Other Biologically Active Compounds". The Laboratory collaborates with a large number of academic and industrial partners in Greece and abroad.

The laboratory has long-term experience in instrumental analysis, trace analysis and physicochemical characterization of materials/biomaterials. The group develops innovative analytical methods for detection, structural characterization, identification and quantitative analysis of materials of pharmaceutical and biomedical interest. It has experience in advanced spectroscopic, microscopic, chromatographic-mass spectrometric, electroanalytical and physicochemical characterization techniques. The group applies various methodologies for non-destructive, in-situ, on-line characterization and trace analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients in formulations. The group is in constant collaboration with the Institute of Osteology (Vienna, Austria), the Institute of Chemical Engineering (ICE/HT-FORTH), the Bioanalytical Laboratory of Gaia Center and with a large number of Greek laboratories or teams.

Advanced Drug Delivery System Group The group has long-term experience in technology, design and development of novel DDS, as nanosized liposomes and drug-cyclodextrin complexes, for advanced delivery and/or targeting of drugs, vaccines or genetic material. It has experience in advanced techniques for preparation and characterization of DDS and elucidation of interactions between drug molecules, cyclodextrins, lipids and polymers, in order to design the appropriate nanomedicine for each specific therapeutic need. Additionally system performance is evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The group collaborates with a large number of academic and industrial groups in Greece, Europe and USA.

The laboratory has long-term experience in the field of anticancer agents. The research interest is focused in the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of new bioactive compounds with potential antitumor activity. Especially, modified steroidal derivatives, small heterocyclic compounds and natural products analogs (e.g. ecteinascidin/saframycin) are among the candidate synthetic targets. Members of the laboratory are in constant collaboration with Greek laboratories or teams in the University of Patras, in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and University of Athens as well as with members or teams of the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Athens. Also, members of the laboratory maintain research collaboration with partners in the EU. Our Laboratory has extensive experience in various chromatographic and spectrophotometric techniques for the purification and identification of all these compounds. Experience in drug design so that all these compounds turn out to be as active as possible (testing in collaboration with (Molecular) Biologists or Biochemists) toward the target (usually Receptor or Enzyme) and performing various reactions under inert conditions as needed, can also be considered as assets that our Laboratory can offer.
